Photo Essay – Muharram Mourning, Kashmere Gate
The heart could not hold its tears.
[Text and pictures by Mayank Austen Soofi]
Portraits of grief captured in the Muharram procession in Kashmere gate, Old Delhi.
We’re in mourning
Ya Hussain Ya Hussain
The Karbala Story – listen and cry
Hai Hussain
We lost!
In agony
Feeling the tragedy
Inflicting pain
Remembering Karbala
Just tears
In rage
Mullah’s kurta
Ladakhi mourners
Bloodied grief
No one is left unmoved
Ya Ali Ya Hussain
salamalekum! austen sahab, amazing pics yaar…ur an awesome photographer and i hope u keep taking amazing pics like these with ur new amazing camera..chalo!! cya!!
What a nice post and some outstanding images. These are the best that I have seen on Moharram rituals in India.>>The anguish of the mourner is also well represented. It is heartening to see that someone is trying to understand what goes inside the mind of the seemingly irrational devotee.>>By the way, what is the policy on your brilliant pictures. Can I borrow some images for my blogs?>Of course, we will give due credit to your blog –>>But if these are copyrighted then we can give links to your site.>>As Arman said, you are an awesome photographer. I think you should organize your exhibition and also bring it to Pakistan among other places.>>Hope you encourage others to be great photographers like yourself? After all, art must be shared and nurtured and not converted into an individual commodity..!
Mr. Rumi,>Thank you for your comments. <>The Delhi Walla<> is very particular about his pictures. But your blog happens to be my favroite blog. I’m addicted to it and have even made it my home-site in my laptop. So please feel free to use the muharram pictures whichever way you fancy. It will be an honour.
These are brilliant photographs depicting Muharram rituals. As Rumi said, you are an “awesome photographer”, and I also encourage you look into an exhibition. The talent is to be shared in mutual gratification!
