Photo Essay – Saliva on the Street. Around Town

A quintessential Delhi sight.

[Text and photos by Mayank Austen Soofi]

Aak thoo.

This, too, is art.

It is always the men who spit their saliva in the streets of Delhi. The spit-forms are enchanting to look at. Some shine like a white pearl. Some resemble enormous silver-coloured worms. Some are translucent. Some seem so delicate as if Moonlight Sonata has just crossed our path. The Delhi Walla presents photographic evidence.

Spitting for art’s sake

  1. this is by far the most disgusting thing I’ve seen on a non-X-rated website. I have been scarred for life.

    1. Oh please! This needs to be written about. Delhiites are by nature only self absorbed and don’t care about others. Just like the men who spit when and wherever they please!!!! Disgusting

    2. Yes,views regarding spitting do need to be aired. But we, the readers, should be spared the horror of watching globs of saliva and phlegm. As for the Delhi-bashing bit, I beg to differ. There are people who care. They may be a minority, but they exist. A sweeping, Thackeray-esque generalization cannot be a part of any well-informed and meaningful discourse. It betrays an insular prejudice.

  2. what prompted you to do this photo essay???? come on MAS!!!! Delhi has a lot better things to photograph….

  3. How awful! It is bad enough we encounter it ourselves in everyday life and now you had to go and immortalize it – in writing! on the web! YUCK! WHY!? I totally agree with all the views expressed by the people who have commented above!

    1. Maybe it was something he wanted to ‘get out of his system’, if you catch my drift. Or maybe it is one of those De Bhasar fits people keep having nowadays.

  4. By the way, all the advertisements on your blog occupy very awkward positions. You might want to do something about the,.

  5. hey you forgot the one loaded with phlegm 🙂

Now the exclusive interview with the person who just had spitted on the road.

The spitting person : There is lot of saliva collected inside my mouth with the strong urge to part with it.What do you expect me to do in such situation, search for the nearest washroom when the ever inviting and all absorbing road is there.

  6. Seeing the comments above, I think you have efficiently derived the real cognitive reactions through these photographs. The distaste is a peculiar condition of how people perceive things around them. Interesting work.
