Imdad Barbhuyan is so inspired by fine art that it sometimes gets very personal. Gets integrated into his very own personality.

Like the pearl on his earring, inspired by the great 17th Century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer.

Strolling about outside the metro station in South Extension II, the 25-year-old architecture graduate says he ran across Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring a few years back. A film based on the painting shows Vermeer piercing a woman’s ear with the earring, all for the sake of art. “And I was moved. Very moved, to do it myself.”

A stylish man, he embraces the concept of being thoughtfully chic by transforming himself through art. “For a very long time I’ve used my hair to achieve this.” For years his golden hair reached down to his waist until one day he braided it up, and then did a good deal of chopping and cutting to get it just right.

More lately he’s explored himself through images. “I’m heavily inspired by vintage photographs and classical painting, and try to recreate them with my own body.”

So…after overcoming a bit of hesitation, Mr Barbhuyan got his left ear pierced a few months back, and then obtained the pearl earring.

All for the sake of art.
